It started with 3 passionate women in 2012.

These women saw the need for a dedicated space where Lao women could connect, support one another, and build a stronger sense of community. In 2013, this vision became a reality when LWAW was officially established as an organization.

What began as a small group of women meeting regularly to share experiences and offer mutual support quickly blossomed into a vibrant and growing community. These gatherings became a safe space where Lao women supported each other in times of need, whether it was during illness, hospital visits, grieving the loss of loved ones, or providing assistance to elders who lacked resources and support. Over time, these informal meetings transformed into a sisterhood, with bonds of solidarity forming and strengthening.

As word spread, more women from across the region joined. This growth led to the development of structured programming aimed at enhancing the physical, mental, and cultural wellbeing of our members. One of our flagship programs funded by the Get Moving Fund, was created to offer exercise classes and fitness sessions tailored to the needs and cultural interests of our community.

Over the past decade, LWAW has expanded its efforts to include cooking classes, cultural performances, and educational programs on Lao language and traditions. We’ve also organized numerous volunteer initiatives, such as food drives, and have provided essential medical assistance and translation services for those in need. LWAW has evolved into a wraparound resource that preserves Lao culture and creates a welcoming environment for women and all community members to thrive.

In the 11 years since our founding, LWAW has grown to over 150 active members, representing eight divisions across Washington State. We’ve facilitated countless community events, strengthened cultural ties, and built a future where Lao women and their families can flourish. Our partnerships with other Lao-based organizations across the state have been instrumental in furthering our mission to preserve our culture, celebrate the arts, and empower the Lao community.
